GRAND COUNTY GENERAL PLAN

JOIN IN THE EFFORT!

Grand County is beginning their process of revising the general plan, which guides policy for the next 5-8 years. The first visioning meeting is on July 6. RRF is developing specifics things we would like the county to address as part of the plan and we would like to encourage our membership to participate in the process.

The more folks saying similar things the better about watershed protection, thereby improving its chances of getting included. Also members should comment on specific implementation suggestions to include including: 'participate in NFS planning to maximize sub/surface water quality and minimize runoff', etc.

Moab Watershed Council may have all the problems that infect most government groups. We need to bring the problems with the watershed forward ASAP to the attention of all.

List of potential problems
1.       Fire control combined with grazing will significantly reduce percolation.
2.       Climate change will reduce percolation by producing more and faster runoff from more rain and less snow.
3.       Housing or large developments on recharge areas will be a source of pollution from street runoff and dumping of household chemicals.
4.       Cutting of brush for fire control will lead to increased invasion of noxious weeds.
5.       Water availability and watershed protection.
